(Family Devotion) Fruit of the Spirit: Joy

Welcome to our outline and plan for our family devotions. This 9 lesson unit is all about the Fruit of the Spirit. We have previously covered LOVE. This lesson is about JOY.

Each lesson begins with worship singing scripture, includes a bible story, memory verse, and prayer, as well as an activity. Some lessons will have one activity and others will have more. The activities can be done as part of your family worship time or separately or not at all. Totally up to you. Please feel free to adjust and modify these family devotions as needed for your family.

The time frame for each lesson is 15 minutes to 20 minutes max. The lesson could take slightly longer if you add on an activity.

Let’s get started. Make sure you have…

Please read through this entire post first before attempting to go through this with your family.

Explain to your child(ren) that you will be talking about JOY. An example of this might be, “True JOY comes from having Jesus in your life and knowing that you will live forever with him in heaven. True JOY comes from the inside out; not from something that happens to us.

I love the idea of my kids learning God’s Word by singing and it makes my heart so happy to hear them sing along and memorize scripture. To read more about the music our family is using and for all the devotions in this series please refer back to the Fruits of the Spirit Family Devotion Overview.

Read the story He’s Here on page 176 of The Jesus Story Book Bible.

The Story: The birth of Jesus.

Discussion: Use this story to discuss with your child(ren) how Jesus is the best promise ever fulfilled and is God’s gift to us. Jesus allows us to have the hope of heaven and is the best reason we have to be filled with JOY.

Galatians 5:22-23 New Living Translation (NLT)

But the Holy Spirit produces this kind of fruit in our lives: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control. There is no law against these things!

Lord, teach our family to seek the JOY that comes from knowing You, rather than the temporary happiness of the world. Teach us to joyfully serve without grumbling or complaining.

Make a Joyful Noise

Directions: Grab supplies from around the house and make impromptu megaphones, microphones, drums, guitars, and any other instrument your heart desires. Use your imagination. Sing your favorite worship song together, or even one of the worship songs from this lesson, as a joyful noise to Lord.

Psalms 100:1-2 says “Shout with joy to the Lord, all the earth! Worship the Lord with gladness. Come before him, singing with joy.”

If your family is like our family it will probably sound more like shouting and look like everyone is running around in circles but if it is being done with a heart that is wanting to please God it is a sweet act of worship.

I would love to hear any feedback if you decide to do this with your own family!
