christmas-family-devotion

Welcome to our outline and plan for our family devotions. This 3 lesson Christmas Family Devotion is all about helping children understand that God’s plan didn’t start in the manger. God’s ultimate plan to save people began long before the nativity story and is the central theme of the Bible.

Each lesson includes worship singing scripture, scripture reading or bible story, memory verse, and prayer. Please feel free to adjust and modify these family devotions as needed for your family.

This week we will be learning about the visits Mary, Joesph, and the shepherds had from the angels.

The time frame for each lesson is 20 minutes.

INTRODUCTION

Please read through this entire post first before attempting to go through this with your family.

Explain to your child(ren) that you will be talking about the Angel’s Announcement of the coming Messiah to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. An example of this might be, “Sometimes when Christmas gets closer, we tell the story of Jesus’ birth without really thinking about the many miracles that happened leading up to his birth. Last week we learned about the Old Testament prophecies. This week we will learn about the role the angels played in announcing the upcoming arrival of the Messiah to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds. Messiah is another name for Jesus and means the person whom God sent to save people from their sin and be their king and the only person who can put us right with God.”

WORSHIP

I love the idea of my kids learning God’s Word by singing and it makes my heart so happy to hear them sing along and memorize scripture. We are using the DVD to sing along with these songs.

  • Seeds Family Worship – Seeds of Christmas – 4. Mary’s Song of Praise
  • Seeds Family Worship – Seeds of Christmas – 5. God with Us
  • Seeds Family Worship – Seeds of Christmas – 6. Joy

BIBLE STORY

For this story you can use pieces from your nativity set to further engage your child(ren) while reading. I have included the scriptural references in parentheses if you would like to find the passages in your Bible.

Read the story below of the angels announcing the upcoming arrival of Jesus to Mary, Joseph, and the shepherds.

God sent the angel Gabriel to a young woman who lived in the northern town of Nazareth. The girl’s name was Mary and she was engaged to marry Joseph. The angel Gabriel said to Mary: ‘Peace be with you! God has blessed you and is pleased with you.’ Mary was very surprised by this and wondered what the angel meant. The angel said to her ‘Don’t be afraid, God has been very kind to you. You will become pregnant by the Holy Spirit and give birth to a baby boy and you will call him Jesus. He will be God’s own Son and his kingdom will never end.’ Mary was very afraid but she trusted God. ‘Let it happen as God chooses.’ she replied to the angel. (Luke 1:26-38)

Joseph was worried when he found out that Mary was expecting a baby before their marriage had taken place. He wondered if he should put off the wedding altogether. Then an angel appeared to Joseph in a dream and said: ‘Don’t be afraid to have Mary as your wife.’ The angel explained that Mary had been chosen by God to be the mother of his Son and told Joseph that the baby would be named Jesus which means ‘Saviour’ because he would save people. When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel had told him to do and took Mary as his wife. (Matthew 1:18-25)

9 months later, in the hills and fields outside Bethlehem, shepherds looked after their sheep through the long night. As the new day began, suddenly an angel appeared before them and the glory of God shone around them. The shepherds were very, very scared, but the angel said, ‘Don’t be afraid. I have good news for you and everyone. Today in Bethlehem a Saviour has been born for you. You will find the baby lying in a manger.

Then many more angels appeared, lighting up the sky. The shepherds heard them praising God singing: ‘Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth.’ When the angels had gone the shepherds said to one another, ‘Let’s go to Bethlehem to see what has happened.’ So the shepherds went to Bethlehem and found Mary and Joseph. (Luke 2:8-15)

Discussion: Use this story to discuss the following with your child(ren).

  • God knows that fear would be the first emotion that the Mary, Joseph, and shepherds would have felt when the angels appeared. He wanted to make sure that the angels reassured them that this was a good visit. What do the angels say to them?
  • Where was Jesus born? God has the angel tell the shepherds that Jesus was born in Bethlehem. Last week we learned about two prophets who spoke about Jesus and his birth hundreds of years before it happened. Isaiah prophesied that a virgin would be the mother of child and give birth to a son and she would call him Immanuel which means God with us. Virgin means a pure, unmarried woman. Mary was the woman that Isaiah spoke about. Micah prophesied that Jesus would be born in Bethlehem.
  • When many angels appeared lighting up the sky the shepherds heard them praising God. Do you remember what they said? ‘Glory to God in highest, and peace to everyone on earth.’ We can praise God too! Let’s say the words the angels said; “Glory to God in the highest!”

MEMORY VERSE

John 3:16 New Living Translation (NIV) For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

PRAYER

Lord, Thank you for the promise and gift of your son Jesus. Keep our family focused on you this Christmas season. Thank you for being with us and for reminding us that we are not alone and have nothing to to fear. Amen.

INTRODUCTION

Please read through this entire post first before attempting to go through this with your family.

Explain to your child(ren) that you will be talking about God’s promises surrounding the birth of Jesus and his birthplace. An example of this might be, “When God makes a promise he keeps it. Hundreds of years ago God spoke through people he had chosen to be prophets. These people had a very big responsibility. Prophecies are messages from God that sometimes speak of the present, sometimes the future and sometimes both. Hundreds of years before Jesus was born God let us know through the prophets Isaiah and Micah he was coming.”

Read aloud the following verses to your family.

Isaiah 7:14 & 9:6

Discussion: Hundreds of years before Jesus was born God let us know through the prophet Isaiah that he was coming. What does it say he will be called? What does Immanuel mean?

Micah 5:2-5

Discussion: The fact that the prophecies about the coming Messiah have been fulfilled should give us security to know that God always fulfills the promises given. To name Bethlehem as the birth place, God was giving information that would be used by the wise men over 400 years later to find where the new born king was born.

HOW IT WILL WORK

The first step for any family wanting to start a having weekly family devotions it to set aside a regular time each week to do it. After dinner works great for us but we have also had success in the morning after breakfast. Don’t look for perfection when having family devotions. There is no perfect family and there is no set way to do this. Figure our what length and format works best for you family and have fun!

Each lesson includes worship singing scripture, scripture reading or bible story, memory verse, and prayer. Please feel free to adjust and modify these family devotions as needed for your family.

The memory verse for this unit will be John 3:16. I have found that repeating the same verse to our kids is the best way for them to memorize and learn.

Our family will be doing each lesson once a week, hopefully twice if there is time. Starting in December there will be a new devotion posted every Sunday leading up to Christmas.

Lesson 1: GOD’S PROMISE (December 4)

Lesson 2: THE ANGEL’S ANNOUNCEMENT (December 11)

Lesson 3: THE BIRTH OF JESUS (December 18)

You can find more information about the worship music we will be using for this unit by clicking HERE.

All you need to get started has been listed in the supplies above.

I would love to hear any feedback if you decide to do this with your own family!
