The Buschel Digest: August 2017

This is the post where I share anything noteworthy I have been reading this last month. While I did read several fiction books this month there was nothing overly exciting to share in that department. I did happen across several blog posts however that stuck out to me. I hope you enjoy them also.

I am still plugging away in my Bible reading. With just three books away from completing the Old Testament I hope to finish the New Testament by the end of the year. Last year I started with the NT and finished with the OT. I included an excellent sermon from our church this past weekend to finish up this post.

Additional Reading: What I Learned from Reading the Bible

Maybe It’s Not an Obstacle

Read this. Great reminder and perspective on difficult and challenging events. “What if your difficult events today are actually not obstacles, but arrows pointing you back to Jesus? What if they’re not standing in the way of your success for today, but instead reminding you to come to the One who defines true success? What if God actually put those events in your life to remind you that you can’t do this?

I Don’t Understand Christians Watching Game of Thrones

Pastor Kevin DeYoung writes, “Whenever there is a new episode, my Twitter feed overflows with people talking about Game of Thrones. First off, I’m always amazed that this many people have HBO. But second, and much more importantly, I’m always amazed that a number of people I respect–smart people, serious Christians, good conservative thinkers–are obviously watching (and loving) the series.”

Be sure to also read his follow up post One More Time on ‘Game of Thrones’ where he responds to the  numerous comments he received. For the record I agree with Pastor DeYoung.

God Will Give You More than You Can Handle

“Christians can make the strangest claims when comforting those who are suffering. What do you say to someone whose life is falling apart? If you have but few precious minutes with a person who’s lost a job, home, spouse, child, or all sense of purpose, what comfort do you give?

We might turn to conventional wisdom instead of Scripture and end up saying something like, “Don’t worry, this wouldn’t happen in your life if God didn’t think you could bear it.” The sufferer may object, head shaking and hands up. But you insist, “Look, seriously, the Bible promises God won’t ever give you more in life than you can handle.” There it is—conventional wisdom masquerading as biblical truth. You’ve promised what the Bible never does.”

He (and They) Must Not Be a Novice

“The Christian world seems able to support a nearly infinite number of books, programs, and ministries related to marriage and parenting. Few of us feel adequate to the challenges of raising children or loving a spouse. We address our inadequacies by turning to experts, lining up en masse to sit under their teaching and benefit from their wisdom. Yet a surprising number of these are written, founded, or run by people who have very little experience. Their scant experience makes them less than ideal as teachers or mentors, for time has not yet given them humility. In fact, I’d wager that the longer you parent, the less confident you feel in so much of your parenting; the longer you’re married, the more inadequate you feel in guiding anyone else.”

Death on Demand? Dutch Euthanasia Moves in Disturbing Direction

This was truly haunting to read. We as a society are creeping dangerously close to an urban “utopia” that has striking similarities to Lois Lowry’s book The Giver.

“In 2002, the Netherlands was the first country in the world to legalize euthanasia. Today, Dutch euthanasia is moving away from “straightforward” cases where a patient has a terminal illness like cancer—and into more oblique territory.

Since 2009, there has been a significant increase in euthanasia for patients with dementia and psychiatric illness. Doctors are also more open to euthanizing elderly patients who have an “accumulation of old-age complaints” rather than an actual terminal illness.”

No Believing Without Following

No Believing Without Following from Compass Christian Church on Vimeo.

We had the privilege of hearing the new Pastor at our satellite campus preach this weekend. The sermon series we are in right now focuses on the journey to discover whether we’re a follower of Jesus, or just a fan. Jesus inevitably asks each of us to consider whether we simply admire Him from a far, or take up our cross and follow Him daily. Our answer to this question determines our eternal destiny! This was an amazing sermon and I know it will be a blessing to you to listen to Pastor Gilbert’s testimony and see the transformative power of the gospel.

Your Friendly Reminder to Check Your Skin & COOLA Review

Disclosure: I received this product for free from Moms Meet, May Media Group LLC, who received it directly from the manufacturer. As a Moms Meet blogger, I agree to use this product and post my honest opinion on my blog. The opinions posted are my own.

Several times a year I go to my dermatologist to have my skin checked. This has been happening since high school. I had my first moles removed when I was 15 years old and have no idea how many more have left my body since.

My last appointment happened in January. Shockingly I had nothing biopsied at that appointment but knew after leaving that I would for sure have several moles removed this summer. My body was still adjusting back from having a baby. Interesting piece of information, pregnancy can cause moles to change shape as well as color. So that is where I was when I walked into my appointment a little over a three weeks ago.

I had two moles removed on my lower back and the results came back that they were benign. After Maisie was born I had to go have surgery on my torso to remove extra pre-cancerous skin. I am super thankful that these moles were just that, regular, although somewhat slightly unusual looking moles.

Basically what I am trying to say is schedule an appointment to check your skin. As much as I dislike the anxious feelings these appointments cause me I know it is important. And remember to wear your sunscreen.

I have tried so many brands of sunscreen over the last 5 years it is ridiculous. Some are too greasy, others smell horrid, and basically I have just learned to settle on any brand that is made with GMO-free ingredients and has a high SPF. When the opportunity came around to review COOLA Suncare I jumped at the chance because this was a brand I had never used.

I was sent 4 different COOLA Suncare Products. The COOLA Sport SPF 50 Guava Mango Sunscreen Spray was the first product I tested. It smells like a vacation in a bottle. The Guava Mango smell is perfect, not overdone at all. I really appreciated that this did not spray on greasy and was also SPF 50. This spray sunscreen is water resistant for up to 80 minutes and then needs to be reapplied. at $36 a bottle it is a higher end sunscreen but worth the money. It is made with lots of bonus ingredients that actually helps improve your skins collagen like algae extract. COOLA Sport SPF 50 Guava Mango Sunscreen Spray is available for purchase at Sephora, Ulta and Nordstrom, as well as at coolasuncare.com.

In addition to the sunscreen I was also sent a makeup setting spray, sport tint with an SPF 50 (shown below), and lip balm.

This sunscreen also was perfect to use on our kids. It sprayed on effortlessly and covered their skin and mine really well. We had no sunburns after playing in the pool for an hour.

The Buschel Digest: July 2017

I thought it would be fun to start a new series sharing what I have been reading this last month. These posts will range from blog posts, articles, and books that have been noteworthy. Enjoy!

Uncharted by Angela Hunt

This book was way different from any of her other books. If I had to describe it in one word it would be haunting. Definitely a book that will stick with you and I couldn’t stop thinking about it when I had finished. I don’t want to say anything else because it would give away the plot.

Chop, Chop The Series of a Lifetime by L.N. Cronk

You can read these for FREE if you have a Kindle Unlimited subscription. I could not stop reading these books once I started. Which is why I read the entire series in two weeks! It was that good! The character development was very well done and it was so interesting to follow the main character as he aged. I cried, I laughed, and I cried some more. If you are looking for a new fiction read be sure to check this out.

Heaven by Randy Alcorn

This book was recommended to me by my Pastor to read. I had been studying Daniel and then Revelation which really got me thinking about Heaven. I really enjoyed this book because it was rooted in scripture and helped me understand what I had been reading in my Bible. If you have EVER had any questions about Heaven this is the book to read. If you have never had any questions about Heaven you should still read this book.

Heaven is such a beautiful place to read and learn about. Our time here on earth is so short and it is reassuring and comforting to know that as Christians our final home will be with God in a new Heaven and new earth.

How Then Shall We Worship? by R.C. Sproul

Worship can mean many things to many people. Even the church cannot seem to agree on how worship should look. We can choose from contemporary music, traditional services, and everything in between. Yet while we often take our cues from pop culture or church history, the true nature of worship is found in God s Word.

Reset for Parents: How to Keep Your Kids From Backsliding by Todd Friel

This is a great book for everyone! Not just parents. It brings everything back to the Gospel. We are all responsible for our words, attitudes, and actions towards others. As parents we have the opportunity and responsibility to show and point our children back to the Gospel as we raise them. If you are looking for how to integrate scripture into your home and child’s heart this is a powerful book and a humbling read.

The Most Dangerous Pool Toy You Own

Dani is a great writer and always posts timely articles that are a great resource for parents. I highly recommend reading this. Josh and I lifeguarded and we saw first hand how floaties create a false sense of security for both the child and the parent. “You don’t know your child can take off their floaties – until they can. You will have your eyes glued on the pool – until you get momentarily distracted and don’t. It’s not just your child who will gain a false sense of security from floaties, it’s you, too. Anything that lessens our best defense to prevent drowning by being alert and constantly watching our children by water, even heightened confidence, is a major problem.”

There is a Better Way to Experience Sexuality, and Christian Parents Need to Be Talking About It

I am so disgusted and disturbed that anyone would EVER think it was appropriate to publish a “how to” guide for anal sex for teenage girls. Melissa from Your Mom Has a Blog responds: “We have to teach our kids that one of the greatest gifts of God is the intimacy between a man and a woman who have committed themselves to loving every inch of each other’s heart and soul. We have to teach them that great sex is safe sex, in the arms of the person who has vowed to hold us up when we need it, who has promised that no illness or accident, no outside interest, no schemes of this world will separate us. We have to show them what it looks like to be in love.”

Standing Against a Destructive Misogyny Threatening our Children

And here is Denny Burk on the same topic: “Last week, Teen Vogue published an article instructing teenage girls how to enjoy being sodomized by their boyfriends. The article is so vile that I am not even going to link to it.”

Guard Your Health

“Any athlete fine-tunes his body and maintains his fitness through a rigorous training regimen. If he doesn’t, his abilities will decline and the competition will soon leave him far behind. Though you may not be an athlete, you are running the race of life. And as you run, you are dependent upon your body and responsible to care for it. If you are going to run to win, you need to guard your health.”

Spurgeon’s Secret for Raising Godly Children

Here are 13 quotes from Charles Spurgeon on raising Godly children.

Earnestly Contending For the Statsitics

“A few weeks ago, TBN released a short clip of an interview with Jefferson and Alyssa Bethke of Why I Hate Religion, But Love Jesus fame. Jeff and Alyssa have a wildly popular website, filled mostly with content on how to have a happy, successful marriage. Right around the time their marriage will turn five years old, their book, Love That Lasts, will launch. Commentary not necessary.”
