Valentine’s Day & Rapid COVID-19 Tests

Life feels like it is moving pretty fast lately. Which is weird because we have been at home for such a long time now that I can only imagine what it is going to feel like when we return to a more “normal” routine. This Wednesday if all goes according to plan we will celebrate our 100th day of homeschool. I am just so proud of all of us.

On Valentine’s Day the kids woke up to treats on the kitchen table and a few new books to read. They also got In-N-Out Burger for dinner at the house from my parents. They were so excited because it was the first time they have had it in over a year. It is so expensive for our family to eat out and when the pandemic happened last year we made a choice to only eat at home. This has saved us so much money because for our family to eat burger’s and fries it costs $50. We don’t want to get into the habit of eating out as often as we were so we will be keeping this treat strictly for birthday’s or other special occasions to celebrate.

Josh and I celebrated Valentine’s Day by using a gift certificate from our dentist to Vincitorio’s Restaurant. Josh picked up the food curbside and we had a date night at home after the kids went to bed. We had a wonderful dinner and live streamed Josh Groban’s Valentine’s Day show. Thank you so much to our dentist, Dr. Anita Elliot, and staff. Josh and I have been going to her office for over a decade. If you are local and looking for a dentist we highly recommend Elliot Dental.

Our week was also filled with Josh going to get rapid COVID tests due to exposures from coworkers. Thankfully both tests were negative and I am just so glad he has had his first and second vaccinations. Huge shoutout to his fire department for having these rapid tests available. On a side note my grandparents go this week for their second shot and my dad is going to get his first. As of Sunday 500,000 people in the United States have died in the current pandemic, this is not far from reaching the grim milestone of 1918 (where 675,000 died). Just so sad.

We have been trying to spend as much time outside as possible lately because the weather has been beautiful. Our backyard sunsets have been amazing lately.

And we have also been taking advantage of our America the Beautiful Pass and hiking and picnicking. This week we hiked by the Salt River and got to see several wild horses on the trail.

Lastly our weekend finished with Josh ripping out a section of our daughter’s wall that had dry rotted. Several days ago he told me that he wanted to build a larger shed in our backyard which prompted me to kindly remind him of the wall project had been on the list for several months.

I love my husband so much and this was all it took to get him motivated to fix the wall. While talking over our plan with my dad on the phone he recommended bleaching the area to kill any mold and spraying foam insulation around the pipe. After the phone call Josh went to Home Depot to buy foam insulation, came home, and got to work.

Hours later we were finishing up texturing the new drywall. I asked Josh if he had remembered to bleach the interior of wall because I had forgotten to do it and assumed he had. He had assumed I had bleached it. And sadly the wall was torn apart again, bleach was sprayed, and another trip to Home Depot was made. We are hoping that the wall will be finished later this week.

Reading about what has been happening in Texas over the last week has made me so grateful to have electricity in my house and running water. If you live in Texas and have experienced lack of electricity and water I am so sorry. You have been in my thoughts and prayers.

I hope you enjoyed this recap of our last few days. Have a great final week of February and thanks for stopping by the blog and reading today.

This Week. Ugh.

This week has been exhausting, horrible, and so sad. It has been horrific what has happened in the span of a few days.

President Trump called Georgia Secretary of State Brad Ratffensperger asking him to overturn the the state’s election results in the 2020 presidential election, there was a pro-Trump mob that vandalized The Capitol which also resulted in the death of Capitol Police officer Brian Sicknick, and the United States had a day with 4,000 COVID deaths. Ugh. All of it heartbreaking.

I am still trying to find the good in each day but some days it feels really yucky and so, so sad. Here are a few things that made for a happier week…

JOSH IS GETTING THE COVID VACCINE! I’M SO HAPPY.

Josh is scheduled for his vaccine on Monday. I am seriously so grateful he has the opportunity to get one. We had a bit of a wait to get the email to schedule but once the email arrived we got him scheduled within the hour.

If anyone else is planning to get a vaccine in Arizona the website to schedule was a little finicky. They recommend using Chrome or Firefox. I can tell you from experience to setup his account Firefox and Safari did not work. Chrome was the only browser that allowed for the account setup. Once the account was setup I could use Safari.

I will be sure to update how his experience goes, if you are interested check back on the blog next week.

HOMESCHOOL

I started back up homeschooling the kids on Monday. We got through the week and it felt good to be back on a routine after Christmas break. I am shocked at the amount of material we get through some days and other days I am just thankful we did math and english.

Also looking at their math workbooks makes me feel slightly overwhelmed. I know we will get through all this because we did last semester but it just looks intense. Thankfully Saxon Math provides great outlines for each lesson.

This week we talked about the New Kingdom of Egypt, next week we learn about Moses and the Plagues, the kids started back up their typing program, Maisie is spending 20 minutes a day on ReadingEggs.com, and we went on another long family walk. All in all homeschooling made this week brighter and much more structured.

APPLE FITNESS+

I got to try out a workout on the Apple Fitness+ platform. I could have done this sooner but I am horrible at updating my watch and phone. Josh finally encouraged me to do the update so I could try a workout. And I am so glad he did. It was so fun!

My little guys did the workout with me and that made it extra entertaining and encouraging. They were telling me good job every 10 seconds and we were all giving high fives to each other after each round. At the end of the workout my three year old said “My legs are shaking”.

Once I use it more I will give a full review. But for having just done one workout I really enjoyed it.

And those are a few positives from a pretty sad week in the United States. Hang in their friends! Keep taking care of yourselves this month. Eat nutritious food, drink plenty of water, try to get more sleep, and if it is nice where you live spend sometime each day outside.

Read Aloud Reviews: When Stars Are Scattered

So many things to say about this book. Which is why I am giving it it’s own review. It deserves it. To see other chapter books I have read aloud while homeschooling my children this year click HERE.

When Stars are Scattered is the true story of young brothers Omar and Hassan and their life in a refugee camp in Kenya. There are many really hard topics that are touched on, such as an arranged marriage of a young girl that results in pregnancy, a father beating his child, death, war, hunger, etc. This book is brilliant because it takes difficult subject matter and makes it easily digestible for older children to early tweens because it is told in a graphic novel.

Yes this book is heavy and sad. But my word do you root for these boys and just want the best for them. This book brought out so many meaningful conversations with my kids we would have never had anytime soon. Plus the illustrations are fantastic and really add to the dialogue and flow of the story.

While this book has really tough topics, it was an excellent way to teach my kids about how other children in the world live. Another moment to have meaningful conversations with them about how you really don’t know someones full story or what they are going through or have gone through. We need to be kind and compassionate to everyone.

Our family has never prayed for refugees before reading this and now we do. Our kids have a deeper appreciation for what we have and the house we live in.

At the end of the book there are pictures of Omar and Hassen and what their lives are like today. It is so uplifting and inspiring. I won’t say anything more because I don’t want to spoil the story or the ending. My kids were eager each night to read When Stars are Scattered and always asked to read another chapter.

We laughed, I cried several times, and overall just really enjoyed this book. The kids asked if there was a part 2. Just for reference there isn’t, yet, maybe there will be in the future.

I would strongly suggest parents to read this book ahead of time because of the adult themes presented. That being said I highly recommend this book even if you the parent are the only one who reads it. For reference I read this book with my 6 and 8 year old.

To close out this post I will end with a word from Hassan. If you want to know what the following word means you have to read When Stars Are Scattered.

“HOOYO!”
